GMID Explained – Why Global Meetings Industry Day Matters
Global Meetings Industry Day (GMID) is an annual global advocacy initiative that highlights the economic, social and strategic value of business events – including meetings, conferences, exhibitions and incentive travel. Observed worldwide each May, GMID brings together destinations, venues, associations, corporations and event professionals around a single message – business events are essential drivers of growth, innovation and human connection.
What is GMID?
Launched in 2016 and now led globally by the Events Industry Council (EIC), GMID is both a moment and a movement. On a designated day – 6 May 2026 – the industry coordinates events, campaigns and conversations across continents to demonstrate the measurable impact of in-person engagement on economies and communities.
GMID is not a trade show or conference. Instead, it is a shared platform for advocacy, storytelling and evidence-based engagement with policymakers, investors, media and the wider public.
Why GMID Matters
In a world shaped by economic uncertainty, geopolitical complexity and workforce transformation, GMID provides a unified opportunity to articulate the value of business events beyond anecdotal success stories. It reframes meetings and exhibitions as strategic infrastructure – supporting trade, accelerating talent development, enabling innovation and strengthening local economies.
The initiative also plays a critical role in countering the perception that business events are discretionary or easily replaced by virtual alternatives. GMID reinforces the reality that face-to-face engagement remains indispensable for trust-building, deal-making and long-term collaboration.
GMID 2026 – The Power of Data
A defining feature of GMID 2026 is the release of the Global Economic Significance of Business Events Study, produced by EIC in partnership with Oxford Economics. This landmark research quantifies the global economic footprint of the business events sector – including jobs supported, tax revenue generated and business activity enabled across regions.
First published in 2017, the study has become the industry’s most authoritative advocacy resource and is widely referenced by governments, destinations, investors and development agencies. Its release alongside GMID ensures maximum visibility and credibility at a global level.
Who Should Participate?
GMID is for the entire business events ecosystem, including:
- Destinations and convention bureaux
- Venues, hotels and hospitality partners
- Event organisers, planners and suppliers
- Associations, corporations and exhibitors
- Educators, students and emerging professionals
If business events form part of your mission, GMID is your platform.
Beyond One Day
Under the stewardship of the Events Industry Council, GMID is evolving into a year-round advocacy channel focused on workforce development, sustainability, inclusion and policy engagement. While the spotlight falls on one day in May, the message extends far beyond it.
A “Moment to Stand Together and Demonstrate”

“Global Meetings Industry Day is our moment to stand together and demonstrate, with clarity and confidence, the indispensable role business events play in driving economic growth, strengthening communities and accelerating innovation. When we unite around credible data and a shared voice, we reinforce not only our industry’s value — but its future.”
GMID reinforces a simple truth – when people meet, progress follows.
