Sierra Leone Steps onto Africa’s MICE Stage as Julius Maada Bio International Conference Centre Opens for ECOWAS Summit

Sierra Leone is making a decisive entry into Africa’s Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) landscape with the opening of the Julius Maada Bio International Conference Centre (JMBICC) this June – timed to host the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Summit for the first time in the country’s history.

More than 50 years after the establishment of ECOWAS, this landmark moment will see Julius Maada Bio host fellow Heads of State and Government in Lungi City, signalling Sierra Leone’s arrival as a serious contender in regional and continental conference hosting.

The opening of the JMBICC is not merely ceremonial. It represents the physical expression of President Bio’s national development vision – one anchored in infrastructure-led growth, international connectivity and economic diversification through tourism and business events.

A purpose-built MICE hub at the airport doorstep

Located just two minutes from Lungi International Airport, the JMBICC offers what few African destinations can currently match – genuine airport-to-stage proximity. Delegates can disembark from their flights and be seated in a modern conference environment within minutes, a competitive advantage increasingly valued by summit organisers, corporate planners and multilateral institutions.

The inaugural ECOWAS Summit is expected to convene close to 500 high-level delegates, including approximately 10 Heads of State and Government, senior ministers, diplomats and technical officials. The decision to stage the summit at the newly completed centre underscores regional confidence in Sierra Leone’s infrastructure readiness, security framework and organisational capacity.

Integrated development for high-level diplomacy

Adjoining the conference centre are 15 newly constructed Presidential Villas, designed to host Heads of State and senior dignitaries within a secure, self-contained precinct. This integrated model – conferencing, accommodation and security within one location – reflects global best practice for diplomatic and high-security events.

Further strengthening the destination’s MICE credentials, a 100+ room Hilton Garden Inn is scheduled for completion on the same site by November 2026. Once operational, the hotel will significantly expand accommodation capacity in Lungi, enabling the destination to host not only political summits but also regional conventions, incentive programmes and corporate retreats.

Lungi City as Sierra Leone’s MICE gateway

The clustering of a modern airport, an international-standard conference centre, diplomatic villas and a branded hotel within such close proximity positions Lungi City as a purpose-built MICE gateway – a rarity in West Africa.

For meeting planners, the value proposition is clear –

  • Reduced logistical complexity
  • Enhanced security management
  • Time-efficient delegate movement
  • Strong appeal for high-level and time-sensitive events

This integrated approach aligns with the growing preference for compact, secure and efficient destinations, particularly for government, association and corporate meetings.

A signal to the African meetings market

Beyond ECOWAS, the launch of the JMBICC sends a broader signal to Africa’s meetings industry – Sierra Leone is open for business events. The country’s strategic investment in conference infrastructure reflects a continental shift, as destinations increasingly leverage MICE tourism to drive visibility, trade, diplomacy and international engagement.

As Sierra Leone hosts its first ECOWAS Summit, it is also marking a defining moment in its MICE journey – one characterised by ambition, convenience-driven planning and a long-term vision for destination competitiveness.

For updates on public access, future event bookings and national MICE positioning, stakeholders are encouraged to monitor announcements from the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs and State House of Sierra Leone.

The message is clear – Sierra Leone has built the stage, and Africa is ready to convene.
