Luxury travel in Africa is entering a decisive new phase – one where sustainability is no longer an add-on or a future ambition, but a defining standard of delivery. That shift came into sharp focus at ILTM Africa with the launch of The Green Journey Collection by LZ Travel, a structured, data-led framework designed to place environmental responsibility at the centre of luxury ground mobility.
Unveiled during Africa Travel Week in Cape Town, the Green Journey Collection formalises an operational philosophy that has long guided LZ Travel’s approach – eco-conscious luxury built on technology, accountability and measurable impact. Rather than positioning sustainability as a marketing narrative, the company has embedded it into how journeys are planned, executed and evaluated.
“From the very beginning, LZ Travel has always been about eco-conscious luxury travel,” says Motheo Modisane, Co-Founder and Director. “We already offset carbon emissions for all the travel we do and partner with organisations such as Justdiggit to plant trees. The Green Journey Collection is about taking what we have been doing and elevating it to the next level.”

At the heart of the initiative is technology. Every vehicle in LZ Travel’s fleet is fitted with AI-enabled software that tracks distance travelled, fuel consumption and routing efficiency in real time. This allows emissions to be calculated accurately and offset using verified data, rather than industry averages or estimates.
“We track every kilometre that every car drives,” explains Ryno Terblanche, Director at LZ Travel. “That allows us to calculate CO₂ emissions per vehicle and offset them properly. It’s not a guess – it’s measured, fleet-wide data.”
The same system also optimises routes, reducing unnecessary mileage and emissions at source. “Our AI selects the shortest and most efficient routes from A to B,” Terblanche adds. “Guests arrive safely and on time, using the least possible fuel. Sustainability is built into how we move people.”

The real-world application of this approach was demonstrated during ILTM Africa itself. Over two days, LZ Travel’s fleet of eight vehicles covered approximately 130 kilometres while transporting buyers and industry stakeholders, generating an estimated 25 kilograms of CO₂. That impact was offset through the planting of four trees, ensuring the movements remained carbon neutral.
Beyond emissions tracking, sustainability is reflected in operational detail. Single-use plastics have been removed from vehicles in favour of glass water bottles, while gifting and amenities are produced from recycled plastics recovered from oceans and landfills. The company’s approach also extends to social impact, with a focus on local employment, skills development and community partnerships.
Looking ahead, the Green Journey Collection signals a clear transition towards low- and zero-emission luxury mobility. The introduction of electric vehicles – beginning with a BMW iX3 – marks the first phase of a broader fleet evolution.

“The luxury experience remains unchanged,” Modisane notes. “What changes is the footprint.”
As LZ Travel showcased the Green Journey Collection during Africa Travel Week, the message was clear – sustainable luxury mobility is not a compromise, but a refinement. And Africa is ready to define its own standards.
